Before You Buy
A vintage camera can be an excellent way to get into film photography, but age means that condition is often more important than the model name.
Two cameras of exactly the same model can have very different values depending on storage history, servicing, cosmetic condition, lens condition and whether the camera has actually been tested.
Used Camera Checklist
What Does "Untested" Mean?
An "untested" camera should not automatically be assumed to work. It generally means the seller has not established that the relevant functions operate correctly.
Questions Worth Asking a Seller
- Does the shutter fire at all speeds?
- Has the camera been tested with film?
- Does the film advance correctly?
- Does the light meter respond?
- Is there fungus or haze inside the lens?
- Is there corrosion in the battery compartment?
- Are the light seals intact?
- Does the seller accept returns?
Choosing Between Cheap and Tested
The cheapest listing is not necessarily the cheapest way into film photography. A low-priced camera that requires repair can quickly cost more than a camera that was already demonstrated to be operational.
For beginners, a clearly described example with realistic photographs and a sensible return policy can be preferable to a heavily discounted camera with an unknown history.
